Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Schoinous: Schoinous, a place in Arcadia, from Schoineus the father of Atalanta. The place being marshy took its name from the rushes in it, just as among the demes also from the things growing in them, Rhamnous, Phegous, Myrrhinous, Marathous. The inhabitant of the place Schoinountios, as 'Selinountios'... and Schoineus, a river, from Schoineus the son of Athamas. Tryphon in the work on derivatives says thus: "derivatives ending in '-eus' never exceed the genitive of the primary form by one. At any rate 'Phokaeus' has not arisen from Phokos, but from Phokaia, and 'Ellopieus' in Callimachus from Ellopia, not from Ellops. The river flowing past Schoinos is called Schoineus, either from the rushes or from Schoineus the father of Atalanta". The citizen, however, 'Schoineus', as of 'Tarsos' 'Tarseus'. From a place 'Schoinothen'.
