Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Palike: a city in Sicily. Theophilos, in book 11 of his Periegesis of Sicily, says that there is a fountain called 'Palikine, Pallikine, Palykyne">Palikine'. Near it is a sanctuary of the Palikoi, who are certain daimones; Aeschylus in Aitnai gives their genealogy as from Zeus and Thaleia daughter of Hephaistos, while Silenos, in book 2, gives it as from Aitne daughter of Oceanos and Hephaistos, and says that they were called 'Palikoi' because, after dying, they came back again among human beings. 'There is also a certain fountain in Palikoi in Sicily, about the size of a ten-couch room. It throws water upward to a height of six cubits, so that those who see it think that the plain will be flooded, and then it settles back into itself. There is also a sacred oath there: for whatever someone swears, after writing it on a tablet, he throws [it] into the water. If, then, he swears truly, it floats; but if he does not swear truly, the tablet disappears, and the man himself is burnt.' A citizen is a 'Palikinos', as 'Erykinos' is from Eryke, and the feminine is 'Palikine, Pallikine, Palykyne">Palikine'.
