Palike: a city in Sicily. Theophilos, in book 11 of his Periegesis of Sicily, says that there is a 'Palikine, Pallikine, Palykyne">Palikine' spring. Near it is a sanctuary of the Palikoi, who are certain daimones; Aischylos, in his Aitnai, traces their descent from Zeus and Thaleia daughter of Hephaistos, and Silenos, in book 2 of his Aitne, from Aitne daughter of Okeanos and Hephaistos. They were called 'Palikoi' because after dying they came back again among human beings. 'There is also a certain spring among the Palikoi of Sicily, about ten couches in size. It shoots water up to a height of six cubits, so that those watching suppose that the plain will be flooded, and then it returns again into itself. There is also a holy oath there: for whatever someone swears, after writing it on a tablet, he throws [it] into the water. If, then, he swears truly, it floats on the surface; but if he does not swear truly, the tablet vanishes, and he himself is burned.' A citizen is a 'Palikinos', as 'Erykinos' is from Eryke, and the feminine is 'Palikine, Pallikine, Palykyne">Palikine'.
