then Zeus named it Euboia, after the cow.

It was named after Abas the Argive, or after the son of Poseidon and Arethousa, as per Aristokrates. The ethnonym is homonymous with the hero, as 'Ion', 'Thessalos', 'Achaios', 'Tros', 'Danaos', 'Dokros'. But 'Τευκρός' differs, for it is oxytone. The possessive is 'Abanteios', either from the personal name or from the 'Abantes', not from some place 'Abantion', as the form from 'Byzantion' is, but as 'Thoanteios' is from 'Thoas'. Apollonios shortened 'Hyantios' as an ethnonym in the phrase 'Hyantiou Onchestoio'; or it is contrary to rule, as in 'Poiantion aglaon huion'. 'Abantias' seems to be from the form 'Abantios', as 'Helikonias' is from 'Helikonios', 'Olympias' from 'Olympios', 'Delias' from 'Delios'. 'Abantia, Abantias, Abantida, Abantios, Abantys, ...+4 more">Abantis' is from the genitive 'Abantos', as 'Helikonis' is from 'Helikonos', 'Bistonis' from 'Bistonos', 'Ausonis' from 'Ausonos'. Perhaps 'Abantias' too was derived from 'Abantis', as from 'Lesbos' come 'Lesbis' and 'Lesbias', and from 'Achaiis' 'Achaiias': 'of the fair-robed Achaiiades'. The feminine form 'Abantia' bears witness to the former account, that 'Abantias' is from 'Abantios'; by a barbarian alteration of β to μ this was said as 'Amantia' in Antigonos, in his Makedonike Periegesis. Kallimachos called it 'Amantine', as in 'Leontine', saying: 'and they settled Amantine Orikia'.
