Karystos: a city beneath Mount Oche in Euboia. After Karystos, son of Cheiron. Theodoridas says that it is 'Cheironia'. The city is situated near the Myrtoan Sea beneath Mount Oche. The mountain was named from the intercourse of the gods Zeus and Hera, or because sheep conceive there when they copulate. For the Achaians say 'oche' for fodder. 'Oches' is also said in the masculine. In this city there is 'a stone that is carded and woven, so that the woven products are made into towels; when soiled they are thrown into the fire and they are cleansed of their dirt, in a manner similar to washing'. It used to be named 'Aigaia' after Aigaion who ruled there, from whom is also the Aegean Sea. There is also a place called Karystos in Aigys towards Arkadia, from which Alkman says Karystion wine comes, according to Strabo, book 10. The ethnonym of the former is 'Karystios': 'in which is the quarry of the Karystian columns'. The feminine is 'Karystia'.
