Δύμη

Dyme: a city of Achaia, the farthest towards the west; hence Kallimachos in the epigrams: ‘going to Dyme, the city of the Achaians’. Dyme was also formerly the name of the country, and the city Stratos; later both the city and the country were called Dyme. It is also said in the plural, as Apollodoros: ‘distant from these by 150 stades, farthest towards the west lie the Dymiai’. A citizen is a ‘Dymaios’. Ephoros, book 24: ‘when the army arrived at Dyme, first the Dymaioi, being astonished …’. Also Pausanias, book 7: ‘for Oibotas, a man of Dyme, who won the stadion race’. And again: ‘for the Dymaioi there is a temple of Athena and a statue’. And in book 8: ‘those towards Achaia are neighbours of the Dymaioi’. Also Apollodoros, or the one who epitomised his work: ‘and the Dymaioi possess the country’. Also Philistos, book 1 of the Sicilian History: ‘in the 6th Olympiad, in which Oibotas of Dyme won the stadion’. Also Apollodoros in book 1 of the Chronika: ‘war arose for the Dymaioi and for the *; whence *’, and Theopompos, book 40: ‘and the leaders of the city were, of the Syracusans, Athenis and Herakleides, and of the mercenaries, Archelaos the Dymaios’. In the feminine ‘Dymaia’. Euphorion: ‘you who hold the keys of wind-swept Dymaia’, because it is westward, wind-swept. Antimachos says it is Kaukonis after the river Kaukon, but some also Asopis. It is separated from Elis at Bouprasia by the river Larissos. It is also said ‘Dymios’, as Boibe ‘Boibios’.
