Βολισσός, πόλις Αἰολικὴ ἐπ´ ἄκρου Χίου πλησίον, Θουκυδίδης Βολίσκον αὐτὴν καλεῖ ἐν ὀγδόῃ. καί φασιν ὅτι Ὅμηρος ἐν τούτῳ τῷ πολισματίῳ τὰς διατριβὰς ἐποιεῖτο, ὡς Ἔφορος. Ἀνδροτίων δὲ δι´ ἑνὸς « σ » γράφει. τὸ ἐθνικὸν τῇ τέχνῃ Βολίσσιος ὡς Λυρνήσσιος, Βολισσεύς ὡς Ἁλικαρνασσεύς, καὶ Βολισσίτης ὡς Ὀδησσίτης. χρηστέον δὲ τῷ προτέρῳ διὰ τὸ σύνηθες.
