Byzantion: the royal seat in Thrace, a most famous city, on the Propontis, on the European side. An oracle was given to the Megarians inquiring at Delphi, as follows: "blessed those men who shall dwell in that city, by the narrow headland of the Thracian shore at the mouth of the sea, where fish and deer graze the same pasture; and to send as quickly as possible, taking everything to heart." And so it was founded by Byzas the son of Keroessa the daughter of Io and Poseidon, or because Byzes was leader of the expedition. And that the sea-urchins there are most sensitive to the winds. It was renamed Constantinople and New Rome. The ethnonym Konstantinopolites, without the 'y'. The ethnonym of Byzas Byzantios with 'i', but the possessive with the diphthong. Byzantios the ethnonym is of three genders. The possessive Byzantiakos. Also said Byzantias and Byzantis. There is also for the region Byzanteia with the diphthong. From Byzantios, Byzantia, Byzantianos; and Byzanteianos with the diphthong as 'Herakleianos'. There is also another Byzantion in India.
