Gangra (name given to the city), Gangrra">Gangra (name given to the city), Gangrra">Gangra (name given to the city), Gangrra">Gangra: a city [in Paphlagonia], feminine. Alexander, in his On Paphlagonia, records it, saying as follows: ‘Nikostratos says that a goatherd was grazing goats around the area. One of them kept separating herself, and the goatherd, at a loss because at home he found her lacking but at pasture full, acknowledged this to his master. He told him to keep watch on the one that separated herself. Keeping watch, then, he saw her going up to a certain high mound and making her way to a certain accessible rock, and from below he heard the bleating of kids; there, as it turned out, the goat had given birth. So, seeing that the place was suitable, he founded a city and named it Gangra (name given to the city), Gangrra">Gangra (name given to the city), Gangrra">Gangra (name given to the city), Gangrra">Gangra, because this was the goat’s name.’ Eratosthenes says it in the neuter, ‘ta Gangra’, and Athenaios in book 3 of his Deipnosophists likewise. The ethnonym is ‘Gangrenos’, as in ‘Bostrenos’. There is also a Gangra (name given to the city), Gangrra">Gangra (name given to the city), Gangrra">Gangra (name given to the city), Gangrra">Gangra in Arabia Felix. The ethnonym should be ‘Gangraioi’, as in ‘Sabaioi’. It is possible for both forms also to belong to both places, as Edessa has ‘Edessaios’ and ‘Edessenos’, by local usage and by the grammatical rule.
