Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Ge: from 'gea' contracted; from which the possessive 'gegeios' by pleonasm of the 'g'. Or from 'ge' 'geios', from which also 'geites', the autochthon and dweller on the land, and 'geinos' denoting material. 'Gepedon' is also the name of the little garden by the houses in a city, which the tragedians say with 'a', in Doric. "'Gepedon' differs from 'oikopedon'; for 'oikopedon' is the floor of a house that has collapsed, but 'gepedon' the little garden in cities adjoining the houses". From 'ge' 'gaia'. The inhabitant 'gaiates', and 'gaieios' possessive, and feminine 'gaieias'. And in 'gaia' and 'graia' the 'a' is short, because they are disyllables, as 'Maia' 'Phaia'.
