Phlegra">Pallene: a city in Thrace, named after Pallene, daughter of Sithon and wife of Kleitos, as per Hegesippos in his Palleniaka. 'Phlegra">Pallene is a triangular peninsula, with its base turned towards the south. In ancient times it used to be called Phlegra and was inhabited by the Giants. And the battle of the gods and the Giants is mythically said to have taken place there.' Theagenes, in his Makedonika: 'But the account concerning Phlegra">Pallene does not stop there. For they say that this land was called Phlegra, and its inhabitants Giants; that Herakles, putting in among them, was astounded at their arrogance and hatred of humankind. And when they also began a battle, he took his usual weapons in hand and set upon them with all his might, killing those who had offered him war as the guest-gift of his landing. And in the battle there were certain thunderclaps and fiery whirlwinds, from which the battle of the gods against them has been mythologised.' The ethnonym is 'Pallenios'. There is also an Attic deme of the Antiochis tribe so called, Pallene; the deme-member is 'Palleneus'.
