Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Katane: a city in Sicily. Hekataios in his Europa: ‘and next Katane, a city, and above it Mount Aitne’. From Katane was Charondas, one of the lawmakers made famous by the Athenians. It got this name either from when the ship of Theokles of Chalkis went down the River Amenanos, and the Dorians say 'ship' as 'nan' without the υ; or because when Aitne was placed there what was above became below. There is also another Katane, opposite Lesbos, spoken of in the plural. The ethnonym is 'Katanaios', same in the feminine and the neuter.
