Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Paros: an island, which Archilochos also calls a city in the Epodes. It was inhabited first by Cretans and a few Arkadians. The name is said to come from Paros the son of Parrhasios, an Arkadian man, as Kallimachos. Nikanor in the Renamings says it was called Paktia, Demetrias, Zakynthos, Hyria, Hyleessa and Minoa and Kabarnis, from Kabarnos who revealed to Demeter the rape of her daughter. The citizen Parios. Rashly then the Technikos Apollonios gave the ethnonym of Paros as Parianos in his On Paronyms, writing thus: "of the second, from 'Zygon' 'Zygianos', and from Paros Parianos, Leontianos Taurianos". From this comes the proverb 'to re-Parianize', as Ephoros in the tenth: "Miltiades, having made landings on some of the other islands, ravaged them, but Paros, then the most prosperous and largest of the Cyclades, he sat down and besieged for a long time, shutting it off from the sea and bringing up engines by land. When the walls were already falling and the Parians had agreed to surrender the city, some brushwood having caught fire of itself near Mykonos, the Parians, supposing that Datis was signalling to them with a beacon, broke the agreement and no longer surrendered the city to Miltiades. Whence they say we still even now use the proverb, saying that those who break agreements 're-Parianize'". There is also another Paros, an island of the Liburnians, as Skymnos the Chian says in the first of the Periegesis.
