Patra: one of the three kinds of association among the Greeks, as Dikaiarchos: "which indeed we call patra, phratria, phyle. Patra was the name given, when men came to the second stage, to the kinship which formerly existed for each by itself, having its appellation from the eldest and most powerful in the family, in the way one might say Aiakidai or Pelopidai. It happened that phatria and phratria came to be said, since some gave their daughters into another patra. For the woman given no longer had a share in the ancestral rites, but contributed to the patra of him who received her, so that, the gathering formerly arising out of longing for sisters together with a brother, another kind of common gathering for rites was established, which they named phratria". And again: "so that patra arose in the way we said from kinship, especially that of parents with children and children with parents, but phratria from that of brothers. Phyle and phyletai were earlier named from the gathering into cities and the so-called peoples. For each of those who came together was said to be a phylon". The inhabitants patrioi.
