OCR: gemini-constrained (gemini-3-flash-preview) on 2025-12-18
Word count: 97
Translation blocked: Main substantive difference is the river reference and preposition in the opening clause (Billerbeck: πρὸς τὸν Ἰορδάνην 'toward the Jordan' vs Meineke: παρὰ τὸν Βαρδίνην 'by the Bardinēn' or similar). Remaining differences are editorial (different lacuna markers) and minor orthographic/tonal variants.
Entities: Δαμασκός (Damascus) [place], Συρία (Syria) [place], Φοινίκη (Phoenicia) [place], Ἰορδάνης (Jordan (river)) [place], Γίγαντες (Giants) [other], Ἀσκός (Askos) [person], Λυκοῦργος (Lycurgus) [person], Διόνυσος (Dionysus) [deity], Ἑρμῆς (Hermes) [deity], Ἁλιμήδης (Halimēdēs (nymph)) [person], Ἀρκαδία (Arcadia) [place], Δαμασκός (Darmaskos (variant/corruption of Damascus)) [place], Δαμασκηνός (Damascene (citizen)) [people], Δαμασκηνή (Damascene (the land/city)) [place]
Etymologies: Folk Etymology Narrative: It was said to have been named because one of the Giants named Askos, having bound Dionysus together with Lykourgos, threw him into the river; Hermes cut off the skin (askos) and stripped it, whence the skin useful for wine (askos).; Eponym Person: Others say that Damaskos, son of Hermes and the nymph Halimedē, came from Arcadia into Syria and founded a city of the same name.; Folk Etymology Narrative: Others that Damaskos was a boastful man; when Dionysus made Syria vine-bearing he cut these things with a pick, Dionysus angry pursued and beat him... it became Darmaskos and thus Damaskos by corruption.; Unclear Metalinguistic: The inhabitant is Damaskēnós and the region and city Damaskēnē.
