Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Pythion: of old the very centre of Gortyn in Crete. The inhabitants Pythieis, also those dwelling in the Pythion. In which is a sanctuary of Apollo. Also Pythion of Macedonia, in which the Pythia are also held. Pythios then the ethnic. There is also Pythion near the Astakene gulf. The inhabitants are called Pythianoi, and Pythian cups.

Πύθιον, τὸ πάλαι μεσαίτατον τῆς ἐν Κρήτῃ Γόρτυνος. οἱ κατοικοῦντες Πυθιεῖς καὶ οἱ τὸ Πύθιον οἰκοῦντες. ἐν ᾧ Ἀπόλλωνος ἱερόν ἐστι. καὶ Μακεδονίας Πύθιον ἐν ᾧ καὶ τὰ Πύθια ἐπιτελεῖται. Πύθιος οὖν τὸ ἐθνικόν. ἔστι καὶ Πύθιον πλησίον τοῦ Ἀστακηνοῦ κόλπου. οἱ κατοικοῦντες Πυθιανοί καλοῦνται καὶ Πυθιανὰ ποτήρια.
