Sources: Νικάνδρος (Nicander) (613–14) [Θηριακοῖς], Θέων (Theon) fr. 3 Guhl, Πλούταρχος (Plutarch) fr. 115 Sandbach, Δημήτριος ὁ Χλωρός (Demetrius the Chlorus)
Entities: Κόροπη (Koropē (Koropi)) [place], Θεσσαλία (Thessaly) [place], Κοροπαῖος (Koropaean (inhabitant of Koropē)) [people], Ἀπόλλων (Apollo) [deity], Ὀροπαῖος (Oropaean) [people], Ἀμφιάραος (Amphiaraus) [person], Ὠρόπη (Oropus / Orope) [place], Εὔβοια (Euboea) [place]
Etymologies: Morphological Composition: It is said that (the name) is due to the omission of the letter kappa: Ὀροπαῖος (Oropaios) {= Koropē}.; Place Transfer: For Oropē is a city of Euboea, where there is a very famous sanctuary of Apollo (implying the Thessalian name was confounded with or taken from that Euboean place).; Folk Etymology Narrative: Nicander (in the Theriaca) has 'or in Apollo's oracle Koropaios was placed...', and commentators read this as linking the name to Apollo's oracle (i.e. Koropaios/Oropaios of Apollo) — a folk explanation — but they are corrected that the sanctuary belongs to Amphiaraus, not Apollo.

Koropē, a city of Thessaly. The citizen is called Koropaios. Nicander in the Thēriaka: “where Apollo the Koropaios established oracles and an ordinance for men.” But those who wrote commentaries on him—Theon and Plutarch and Demetrius of Phalerum—say: “Nicander [means] Apollo of Oropos and of Koropē. He does not know that it is a sanctuary of Amphiaraus, not of Apollo. And ‘Oropaios’ is said by omission of the kappa (Koropē).” Koropē, however, is a city of Thessaly. It is better to suppose that he has made a mistake; and one also writes Oropaios. For Oropē is a city of Euboea, where there is a very famous sanctuary of Apollo.”
