Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Sintia: Sintia, a city of Macedonia near Thrace, as Eudoxus in the fourth book of the Circuit of the Earth. The inhabitants Sintoi, oxytone. Something marvellous happens among them, as Aristotle says: that there is a certain river called Pontos, in which certain stones are carried down, which when burning undergo the opposite of charcoal from wood; for when fanned they are quickly extinguished, but when sprinkled with water they kindle; and when they burn, they give off a foul smell like asphalt, and have so pungent a smell that none of the reptiles can endure it when they are burning." Also said 'Sintioi', and 'Sintion' the neuter.
