Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Sybaris: Sybaris, a city of Italy and a river. The city was later named Thourion, and it was captured by the Crotoniates when an oracle had been given to them: "Fortunate Sybarite, all-fortunate, you shall ever be in festivities, honouring the race of the gods that are forever, so long as you revere the god before mortal man; but when a mortal man before the god, then war and civil strife shall come upon you." And their destruction came about in accordance with the oracle thus. One of the Sybarites was flogging a slave in the countryside, and when he fled for refuge to the goddess the master kept on beating him; but the slave, since it was of no avail, immediately betook himself to the tomb of the man's father and obtained respect, and at once the statue of Hera turned away. The citizen 'Sybarites'. And the feminine 'Sybaritis'. And 'Sybaritikos', and a 'Sybaritic' disaster.
