Syrakousai: Syracuse, the largest city of Sicily, as Hecataeus in Europe, a foundation of Archias, a colony of Corinth, contemporary with in Sicily and Naxos. They say that Myskellos the founder of Croton and Archias the founder of this city, consulting the oracle at Pytho, were asked by the Pythia whether they wished to have wealth or health, and Myskellos said health, Archias wealth, and to the one she gave to found Syracuse, to the other Croton; and it came to pass that the Crotoniates inhabited a healthy city and were athletes, while the Syracusans were wealthy to such a degree that even a proverb arose concerning the poor: "that they could not even come to a tithe of the Syracusans". The ethnonym 'Syrakousios' and 'Syrakousia' the feminine, and a lake, which is called Syrako, and 'Syrakoseus'.
