Ἄβαρνος

Abarnis, Abarnus, Abarrnos, Aparnis, Lampsakos">Abarnos: a city and surrounding territory [and] a promontory in Pariane. Herodian in book 4 says that it is called 'Abarnis', but also with the ending '-ος'. The inhabitants are 'Abarneis', just as 'Apsyrteis' derives from the form 'Apsyrtos', 'Kamireis' from 'Kamiros', 'Aleis' from 'Alos', and 'Telmisseis' from 'Telmissos', concerning which something will be said. The form 'Abarnis' cannot have this kind of ethnonym; for words in '-ις' favour the pattern in '-ιτης', as 'Memphites' from 'Memphis'. The forms 'Makrieus', 'Chalkieus' and 'Chalkideus' arose from a genitive. Hekataios of Miletos, in his Periegesis of Asia, says that it is a promontory of Lampsakos. Ephoros in the fifth book says that it was named after the Abarnis in Phokis by the Phokaians when they were founding Lampsakos. Apollonios: 'Perkote next to it, and the sandy shore of Abarnis.' Sophokles, commenting on this, reports that Aphrodite, after giving birth to Priapos malformed in Lampsakos, disowned him and called the region 'Aparnis', which by corruption is also called 'Abarnis'. [It is both a city and surrounding territory and a promontory.] The form 'Aparnis' with π is also found, as in Artemidoros the geographer. The ethnonym is 'Abarnaios' and the feminine 'Abarnaie'.
