Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Azanoi: a city of Phrygia. Strabo in the twelfth: "of Phrygia Epiktetos are Azanoi and Nakoleia". The citizens Azanitai, the feminine Azanitis. Herodian with 'ai' in the first of the General, saying: "Aizen son of Tantalos, from whom the city Aizanoi in Phrygia". Some call it Azanion. Hermogenes says not so either, but that it is called Exouanoun; for it is said that near the place there were farmsteads, and when a famine occurred the shepherds gathered and sacrificed for good pasture to come; the gods not hearing, Euphorbos sacrificed to the divinities the 'ouanous', which is a fox, and the 'exis', which is a hedgehog; and the gods being pleased, abundance came and the land bore much fruit, and the neighbours, learning of it, made him priest and ruler. From him the city was called Exouanoun, which translated is 'hedgehog-fox'. And Azanion seems to have been altered from Exouanoun. It is similar to the case of Bithynion, about which we shall speak.
