Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Ailia: a city of Palestine, formerly Hierosolyma, from Aelius Hadrianus. The citizen Ailiotes, as 'Kastaliotes' 'Italiotes'. Some also call them Ailieis, as Eudaimon in the Orthography, writing Aileia with the diphthong 'ei', and Ailieus with the 'i': "as 'Sigeion'," he says, "'Sigieus'". But concerning Sigeion and 'Sigieus' it will be shown in its proper place. The example however is not apt. For if so, it ought to have been the disyllable Aileus. For such are found one syllable short, from Antiocheia 'Antiocheus'. But the masculines in 'eus' do not come from these, but from those in 'os'. For from 'Antiochos' 'Antiocheus', and from 'Seleukos' 'Seleukeus', as Habron in his On Paronyms. For if it were from Alexandreia, it would be 'Alexandreieus'. But Alexandros is the origin of both.
