Akanthos: a city of Thrace fenced with thorns, above Athos, whence it is named, or from a certain Akanthos, as Mnaseas. Second, there is also in Egypt Akanthos, three hundred and twenty-two stades from Memphis, "a sizeable grove of the Theban acacia, from which also the gum is collected". Third, another in the Chersonese by Knidia. Fourth, there is also of Athamania. The ethnonym of Akanthos Akanthios, from which also the proverb "Akanthian cicada" of the voiceless, for such are the cicadas of that land, as Simonides. The feminine Akanthias. Of the of Akanthoi, Akanthopolites; for the city is also so called; as 'Leontopolites' and 'Lykopolites' and 'Kynopolites', about which it will be said.
