Akarnania: a land separated from the Kouretes by the Acheloos.... wherefore the shorn are called Kouretes, the unshorn Akarnanes. Some each tribe has its name from a hero, others say the Kouretes are from Mount Kourion, others "that they got the name from dressing as women like girls... for there was such an emulation also among the Greeks, so that the Ionians trailing-tunicked and wove in the topknot and the cicada, and those with Leonidas, combing their hair when they went out to battle, were despised by the Persians". The ethnonym Akarnan, as 'Ainian' 'Atintan' Athaman 'Aizan', for they are simple. Titanopan is compound. About 'Dyman' it will be said. From the genitive Akarnanos, Akarnania, as 'Kilikia' Phrygia, and the feminine Akarnanis.
