Amphissa: a city of the Ozolian Lokrians. It was named because it is enclosed by the mountains lying around. A derivation, as from 'anti' Antissa and from 'epi' 'epissa', so 'amphi' Amphissa. The citizen Amphissaios and Amphisseus. The from the place Amphissethen. There is also a region of Lesser Armenia Amphissene, as Strabo in the eleventh.
