Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Andania: a city of Messene, homonymous with the land. For so Messene too was called Andania, which they say some of the men of Kresphontes settled and so called because it did not please them. The ethnonym Andanieus, as Philon in his On Cities. From this came Aristomenes, a most illustrious general. The Lakedaimonians, marvelling at him who had many times defeated them, when they at last overcame him in the Messenian wars, cut him open and examined whether there was anything in him beyond other men, and found an abnormal viscus and a hairy heart, as Herodotos and Plutarch and Rhianos. The feminine Andanias. Also said Andanios, as Rhianos.
