Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Diospolis: the great city of the Egyptian Thebaid, called hundred-gated, a foundation of Osiris and Isis. Before it was destroyed by the Persians, Baton says, it had thirteen thousand and thirty villages, seven million people, a measured extent of three thousand seven hundred arourai, a hundred gates set in order, four hundred stades in length. There are also four other small ones in Egypt, in one of which they tame the crocodiles, worshipping them in caves and wells, not tasting of the river, even if strongly urged. Sixth of Lydia. Seventh of Palestine. The citizen Diospolites.
