Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Ephesos: a most illustrious city of Ionia and a harbour in a gulf. Herodotos says it is of Lydia. It was called Smyrna from Smyrna the Amazon. It was also called Samorna and Trecheia and Ortygia and Ptelea, whose citizen is Pteleaios. And there was a sanctuary of Artemis there. And Pteleates the citizen. The ethnonym of Samorna Samornaios. It was named from one of the Amazons, whom they say was both queen and attendant of Artemis. And she had a daughter Amazo, from whom the Amazons. The city, settled in a hollow place, was flooded by a storm, and when ten thousand had died Lysimachos transferred the city to where it now is, and named it Arsinoe from his wife Arsinoe; on his death the former name was resumed. An epigram of Douris of Elaia on the flood is current, thus: "Airy clouds, whence, having drunk bitter waters, did you with unrelenting night flood everything—not of Libya, but those countless dwellings of wretched Ephesos and possessions of long years? Where then did the saviour gods turn their eye? Alas for the most-sung by far of the Ionian cities. All those things, like rolling waves, ran into the sea with the rivers spread wide." There is also Ephesos an island in the Nile, and Chios and Lesbos and Kypros and Samos and others, as Hekataios. The ethnonym Ephesios. Epheseia with the diphthong is also found. For so Sophokles in the Alexandros. Also said Ephesites, as Habron says, and Epheseus, as 'Tarsos' 'Tarseus', Halikarnassos 'Halikarnasseus'.
