Ἠλεκτρίδες νῆσοι

Elektrides islands, in which there are two statues of Daidalos and Ikaros. ‘They say that these islands and the Eridanos river too have been silted up. There is also a lake near the river, with hot water; a heavy and oppressive smell breathes out from it, and no animal drinks from it nor does any bird fly over it, but it falls and dies. Its circumference is two hundred stades, and its breadth [up to ten]. They also tell the myth that Phaethon, struck by a thunderbolt, fell there. There are also many poplars there, from which falls what is called ‘elektron’, like gum because it hardens like stone.’ The inhabitants are ‘Elektritai’, according to the pattern [of those in ‘-is’], and ‘Elektrinoi’ because of the local form.
