Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Aithale: an island of the Tyrsenians, Hekataios in the Europe. It seems to have been so called because it has iron, which has its working in soot. Philistos in the fifth of the Sikelika calls it Aithaleia, as do Herodian and Oros. Polybios in the thirty-fourth says Lemnos is called Aithaleia, from which came Glaukos, one of those who invented the welding of iron; for there were two. This one a Samian, who also dedicated a most celebrated work at Delphi, as Herodotos; the other a Lemnian, a distinguished sculptor. The city was perhaps so called from the craters of Hephaistos sent up. For these things are agreed there. The ethnonym from Aithaleia Aithaleites, as 'Zeleites', but from Aithale Aithalites, as 'Sinopites' 'Ioppites'. Aithalites can stand for Chian; for Chios was so called. And the citizens Aithaleis.
