Stephanos of Byzantium - Ethnika
Dotion: a city of Thessaly, where the Knidians migrated, whose territory is Knidia. Kallimachos in the Hymns: ‘Not yet Knidia, but still I dwelt in sacred Dotion.’ It was called after Dotia, daughter of Elatos. Pherekydes, after Dotios son of Asterios and Amphiktyone daughter of Phthios. As Arkhinos says, after Dotos son of Neonos son of Hellen. Mnaseas, after Dotos son of Pelasgos. The plain itself is enclosed all by itself by its own mountains. A citizen is a 'Dotieus'. Sophokles in the Larisaioi:
And as I was throwing for the third time, a Dotieus manclose by, at Elatos, made contact in the discus-throw.
And in the earlier Lemniai:
Pheretides Admetos andthe DotieusLapith Koronos.
In the feminine 'Doteis'. Rhianos in book 4 of the Messenianika: ‘having recognised the voice for Doteis, daughter of Nikoteleia.’ Also 'Dotiad', as in 'Ilias'. Sophokles in the Peleus: ‘king of the land of Dotiad.’ Apollonios the Rhodian in Foundation of Rhodes:
all that of the landand works of Dotiad the earlier Haimonians accomplished.
Antimakhos in book 2 of his Lydē: ‘fleeing from the land, beyond Dotiad.’ Also the neuter 'Dotion'; Dionysios in book 1 of the Gigantiad: ‘and the resounding Spercheios, and Dotion valleys they possess.’ And the singular in book 2: ‘and the brazen cauldron thundered through the empty Dotion plain.’
It was called Dotion after Dotos, son of Pelasgos, as Herodian in book 8: ‘Dotos son of Pelasgos, after whom the Dotion plain.’ Horos therefore in the Ethnika writes as follows: ‘and, as the poet narrates the matters concerning Thamyris at Dorion, again Hesiod says that in the Dotion plain he was blinded’. For he sets this alongside the original ethnics that are written with a double spelling. Accordingly he adds: ‘for it is not said as Chalkedon and Karchedon and suchlike. For the one with λ is by the Black Sea, while the one with ρ is before Libya.’ We, however, have already shown, through many testimonies, one Dorion with ρ and another Dotion with τ.
