Δώτιον

Dotion: a city of Thessaly, where the Knidians migrated, whose land Knidia. Kallimachos in the Hymns: "not yet in Knidia, they still dwelt in holy Dotion". It was named from Dotia the daughter of Elatos. Pherekydes from Dotis the son of Asterios and Amphiktyone daughter of Phthios. But according to Archinos, from Dotos son of Neonos son of Hellen. Mnaseas: "from Dotos the son of Pelasgos. The plain is by itself enclosed by its own mountains". The citizen Dotieus. Sophokles in the Larisaioi: "and as I made my third throw, a Dotian man, Elatos, came close to me in the discus-throw". And in the first Lemniai: "Pheretiades Admetos and the Dotian Lapith Koronos". The feminine Doteis. Rhianos in the fourth of the Messeniaka: "likening his voice to Dotian Nikoteleia". And Dotias, as 'Ilias' from 'Ilieus'. Sophokles in the Peleus: "king of the Dotian land". And Apollonios of Rhodes in the Foundation of Rhodes: "and all the works of the Dotian land that the earlier Haimonians wrought". And Antimachos in the second of the Lyde: "fleeing outside the Dotian land". And the neuter Dotion, Dionysios in the first of the Gigantias: "and roaring Spercheios, and they hold the Dotian vales". And the singular in the second: "and the empty cauldron thundered through Dotian Argos". It was called Dotion from Dotos the son of Pelasgos, as Herodian in the eighth: "Dotos the son of Pelasgos, from whom the Dotian plain". Superfluously, therefore, Oros writes thus in the Ethnika: "and while the poet relates the story of Thamyris in Dorion, Hesiod again says he was blinded in the Dotian plain". For he ranges this among the primitives of ethnics with two spellings. At any rate he adds: "for it is not said as Kalchedon and Karchedon and the like. For the one with 'l' is around the Pontos, the one with 'r' before Libya". But we have anticipated by showing through many testimonies that the one with 'r', Dorion, is one thing and the one with 't', Dotion, another.
