Πολύβιος πέμπτῳ. τὸ ἐθνικὸν Κωνωπεύς καὶ Κωνωπίτης καὶ Κωνωπαῖος. ἔστι καὶ Κωνώπιον, τῆς Μαιώτιδος λίμνης, ὅπου φασὶ τοὺς λύκους παρὰ τῶν ἁλιέων λαμβάνοντας τροφὴν φυλάττειν τὴν θήραν· ἐὰν δὲ ὑπολάβωσιν ἀδικεῖσθαι, λυμαίνεσθαι καὶ τὰ λίνα καὶ τοὺς ἰχθύας αὐτῶν. τὸ ἐθνικὸν Κωνώπιος καὶ Κωνωπιεύς.
Kōnōpē: a city of Akarnania. Polybius, book 5. The ethnic (gentilic) is Kōnōpeus, also Kōnōpitēs, and Kōnōpaios. There is also Kōnōpion by the Maiōtis lake, where they say that the wolves, receiving food from the fishermen, keep watch over the hunting; but if they suppose that they are being wronged, they ravage both their nets and their fish. The ethnic is Kōnōpios and Kōnōpieus.
